WHY DO I NEED ANESTHESIA?

Anesthesia helps so that you:

  • Won't feel pain and discomfort during the procedures

  • Will be sedated and asleep without any stress.

  • Won't move during the surgical procedure, letting the surgeon focus on the operation and achieve the best surgical outcome.

  • Won't remember the operation at most of the time (you will be mentally relaxed).

  • Feel more comfortable postoperatively(anesthesiologist will give you pain medication if needed during procedure).

  •

WHAT KIND OF ANESTHTESIA WILL I GET?

Most likely you will receive Intravenous Sedation (commonly known as twilight anesthesia). Sedative medications are administered through the veins. It is widely used for various office procedures including colonoscopy and due to its rapid effects and minimal risks most clinicians and patients prefer this method. IV sedation has less side effects such as nausea, less interference with health conditions, less risk of blood clots and lung complications, and is easier to reverse, thus, patients recover much quicker.

WHO WILL GIVE ME ANESTHESIA?

Only Board Certified Anesthesiologists with  Professional Anesthesia Physicians provide anesthesia services.

WHY CAN I NOT EAT OR DRINK BEFORE SURGERY?

Anesthesia decreases the patient's ability to protect their lungs from food or liquids entering. Patients can develop severe lung complications from food and liquids entering their lungs under anesthesia.

It is very important that you follow the provided instructions.  If you do not, your surgery may be delayed or cancelled.

SHOULD I TAKE MY ROUTINE MEDICATIONS ON THE DAY OF SURGERY?

Take your daily routine medications with a small sip of water in the morning, except blood thinners and/or medication for diabetes. You will be given instruction from the surgeon’s office.

MAY I DRIVE HOME AFTER THE SURGERY?

Any patient receiving anesthesia should not drive until the next day. A patient receiving sedation for a procedure is required to have a ride home.
